What would it take to plan a new year party?
Multiple perspectives, ideas, planning, to do lists to be written, reaching out to concerned people for execution, writing invites...the list is long.
Taking a break from the news cycle, Young Writers' Club decided to dive into planning a celebration for the New Year. Organizing an event big or small requires plenty of collaborative effort. Keeping this occasion in perspective, sessions going forward would involve plenty of brainstorming, discussions, real life written applications and some amount of role play too. This is the first week in the three week series leading upto the New Year.
What if this is our venue for a new year party?
Starting with a location makes it easier to lay out rest of the details. The teens were given this as a venue for organizing a celebration.
Reactions:
“Given this as a venue, how about a day party? Perhaps a Christmas & New Year Party combined?”
“Why not break the tradition of night parties and instead have a day party?”
“Enjoy without having to stay awake…”
“New beginnings, day party…”
“How about a double party? Attend any of the night parties and attend this one the next day?”
“While that sounds good, it is going to be very tiring.”
Interestingly, most of the teens were inclined to do this, until another teen chose to change the direction.
“A night party has a different vibe to it. There are no restrictions of when to sleep and when to wake up the next day. Everyone is relaxed and there is a feeling of freedom in the air. After all it is only once a year that we stay up to celebrate. But this venue will not work for a night party.”
Votes tilt towards night party and for venue change.
Planning for the party- Writing a “to do” list
Find a suitable venue
Guest list- Which age group is attending? Only teens or adults too?- It was unanimously decided that there must be at least one adult at the venue- preferably a non-interfering adult who will swing into action if the need arises:)
Decorations- lights?
Entertainment- A good DJ is important
Good food- menu to be decided
Dress code or wear what every you want? - One of the teens pointed out that although the latter option may be preferrable, having a dress code could prevent some from going to extreme outfits. Which led to the next to do- choosing a theme.
Theme- something relevant to the current teen generation- What can that be?
Other decisions- a) Should there be a time limit to manage the crowd better?
b) Theme decision- how about dress like your favorite Spotify artist? - nice for photo ops.
List writing is also writing. It requires a different approach and is an excellent exercise in writing. It involves using the right choice of words and the phrases need to be easy to read quickly and understand. More importantly, the writer of the ‘to do’ list inevitably becomes the reader at a later point in time. As a result, there is more care taken while making a ‘to do’ list.
